An Evening with Kate Mildenhall in Inverloch

Book lovers, mark your calendars! Award-winning author and podcaster Kate Mildenhall is coming to Inverloch Library on Friday, February 28, at 6 PM for an evening of storytelling, creativity, and literary insight. This is a unique opportunity to meet one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary writers, hear about her latest works, and gain behind-the-scenes insight into her creative process.

A Literary Journey Across Genres

Kate Mildenhall is a writer, teacher, and podcaster whose books span a variety of genres, from historical fiction to dystopian thrillers and now, children’s literature. Her novels include:

  • Skylarking (2016) – A historical fiction novel inspired by true events, longlisted for the Voss Literary Prize and the Indie Book Awards.
  • The Mother Fault (2020) – A gripping dystopian thriller praised for its tense, fast-paced storytelling.
  • The Hummingbird Effect (2023) – A powerful novel exploring the interconnected lives of women across generations.
  • To Stir With Love (2024) – Her first children’s book, a heartfelt picture book celebrating the love and traditions passed down through grandmothers.

Each of Kate’s books offers a unique reading experience, but they all share a common thread—exceptional storytelling, deep emotional resonance, and a love for the written word.

The Story Behind To Stir With Love

Kate’s latest book, To Stir With Love, is particularly special, as it draws from her personal memories of her beloved grandmother. In a recent blog post, she reflected on how the sights and smells of spring—blooming magnolias, the scent of freesias, and visits to the local nursery—bring back waves of nostalgia for her Grandmama. The tradition of making Christmas pudding together became the foundation for this beautifully illustrated picture book, which celebrates the bond between grandparents and grandchildren through food and storytelling.

At the event, Kate will discuss the personal inspiration behind To Stir With Love and how stories help us navigate love, loss, and cherished family traditions.

More Than Just an Author

In addition to her writing, Kate has been an influential voice in the literary community. For the past six years, she has co-hosted The First Time Podcast alongside fellow writer Katherine Collette. The podcast features interviews with literary giants such as Tim Winton, Helen Garner, Richard Flanagan, George Saunders, and Charlotte Wood, offering aspiring writers and book lovers a fascinating glimpse into the writing and publishing world.

Kate is currently undertaking a PhD in creative process at RMIT University while working on her highly anticipated fourth novel. Her dedication to the craft of storytelling makes this event a must-attend for anyone passionate about books and writing.

An Evening to Remember in Inverloch

This event is proudly hosted by The Friends of Inverloch Library, who have planned an exciting year of author talks. Kate has been looking forward to visiting Inverloch for some time and will also be making a special visit to the local primary school to discuss To Stir With Love with young readers.

Signed copies of Kate’s books, including To Stir With Love, will be available for purchase on the night. For those looking to pick up a copy beforehand, local bookstore Paperplay in Inverloch has stock of Kate’s books.
